When Your Family Speaks More Than One Language
In many homes, parents feel most at ease in Spanish while children switch easily into English. Important things can get lost between the two. A parent may struggle to explain how worried they are, and a child may not have the words for what is happening at school or with friends.
Debbie is bilingual in English and Spanish. She can hold sessions in either language, or move between them, so everyone in the family can be understood.
How Debbie Works With Families
Debbie has experience working with children and families and brings a culturally responsive approach to each session. That means she takes your family's values, traditions and expectations seriously rather than asking you to leave them at the door.
- Helping parents and children understand each other
- Support for a child who is anxious, withdrawn or acting out
- Adjusting after a move, a separation or a new family member
- Space for parents to talk through their own stress
Sessions From Home
All sessions are online, by secure video. Families can join together from home, and evening and weekend times are available at the practice. Everyone taking part needs to be located in Texas during the session.
Respecting Your Family's Culture
Families who speak Spanish at home come from many places and traditions. Respect for elders, the role of extended family, faith, and expectations about privacy all shape how a family handles hard times. Debbie takes those things into account. She will not ask you to choose between your culture and getting help. Instead, she works with what matters to your family so the support fits the way you live. Grandparents, aunts or other caregivers can be part of sessions when that makes sense for your child.
Debbie Vidana is a Graduate Counselor Intern. She practices under the supervision of a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor (LPC-S) while she completes her master's degree in counseling.
